Hydrogen Breakthrough Begins
Hydrogen Breakthrough Begins Hydrogen Breakthrough Begins Hydrogen Breakthrough BeginsAutonomously driven vehicles and electric-powered cars flaunt technologies that are beginning to capture the imagination of the public. Tesla is the poster child for electric-powered cars, but the Chevrolet Volt is gaining. Another technology is lagging, but it wont go away and its proponents think it could rapidly surpass its rivals if the next round of research shakes out.Hydrogen is the other alternative fuel, and though it is unclear what the new Trump administration thinks about it, car manufacturers and researchers are moving ahead. Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota already offer hydrogen-fueled cars, but storage remains an issue. For now, stakeholders are focusing on hydrogen infrastructure focused on high-pressure storage or very cold temperatures. But other work is being done to make storage better and more economic, delivering hydrogen at lower pressure and higher on-board densities. An Indiana st artup born from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is taking a National Science Foundation grant to prove a low-pressure solid-state delivery system. Peter Schubert, founder of Green Fortress Engineering Inc. and prof of electrical and computer engineering, says his system has the potential to be disruptive by delivering hydrogen at low pressures of eight bars or even less. Now, compressed hydrogen gas is stored at 700 bar, or atmospheres of pressure.Schubert, also the director IUPUs Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy, says the key lies in using cheaper and more abundant materials. Metal hydrides are the preferred catalyst in existing low-pressure storage systems and have been used for a long time. But they give off a lot of heat during recharge, up to 500 degrees Centigrade. That makes dissipating heat more complicated, says Schubert.Schuberts system will use less expensive and more common silicon, rather than metal hydrides. Using ansicht less-expensive ma terials could make solid-state hydrogen storage available to every economic market, he says.Solid-state hydrogen storage provides a much greater volumetric capacity than gaseous or liquid H2. Source Brookhaven National LabaratoryBut the long-range effects could even be greater, he says. Silicon is almost ubiquitous, used in manufacturing computer chips and solar panels. The fledgling technology would allow homeowners or businesses to generate their own hydrogen using rooftop solar panels to split water. Storing it as hydrogen in silicon, a home could theoretically be fueled overnight or over a number of days. With solar panels and water, you could have all the utility needs for a lifetime, says Schubert. And on a cost curve of less than $8 per kwh, it could clobber batteries and completely disrupt energy supply.Thats a grand plan, but Schubert thinks its future isnt that far away if the next research steps are successful. The first phase is performing the first gaseous recharge of a solid-state hydrogen storage media, to make valid the theoretical work that led to the NSF grant. That includes working with polycrystalline silicon and metallurgical grade silicon, something not yet attempted. That would be followed by construction of a one-tenth scale radio-controlled car fitted with a fuel cell and hydrogen storage media.Other researchers are looking at hydrogen storage a little differently. A Florida State University professor is designing new materials to store hydrogen more efficiently. In an article published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Jose L. Mendoza-Cortes used computer simulations and mathematical equations to describe porous materials of transition metals that cause hydrogen to bond to it.Made of earth abundant materials such as cobalt, iron or nickel, the materials could be placed or manufactured within a fuel tank. Because the hydrogen molecules bond to the material, more hydrogen could be fitted in and condensed into a tank. Furt her, because hydrogen bonds to the material, the tank never really would reach the empty level, claims the assistant professor of chemical engineering.More hydrogen can be stored at lower pressure and room temperatures, making some of these materials good for practical use, he says.Hydrogen can be made into a liquid at 1 bar and 20 degrees Kelvin, or minus-423 degrees Fahrenheit, and stored at 71 grams per liter. At 700 bar and 298 degrees Kelvin, 76.7 degrees Fahrenheit, it is stored at 37 grams per liter. Mendoza-Cortes materials promise hydrogen storage at less than 200 bar at room temperature.Current compressed hydrogen systems require large facilities to pressurize the gas to 10,000 lb per square inch. Fuel tanks must be super strong to handle the pressure, notes Schubert. His system operating at 8 bar allows for using a much lighter tank.Schubert says his real passion is space-based solar power, putting solar panels in space where they would generate electricity almost continu ally, relaying the power to earth. He actually thought of using silcon as a medium when writing a novel about hydrogen and the space program. It was a plot device, he says. I thoughtSiliconand it is pourous. No one had proposed anything like that before.Schubert was working in the private sector at the time, and worked on the idea with the approval of his employer. The theoretical work proved fruitful, and he was awarded the patents for the system, which now belong to IUPU. If the next step is successful, he thinks a working commercial system may be five or six years away. Coupled with another plan to produce hydrogen from biomass on a local scale, he thinks hydrogen-powered cars could give electric-powered competitors a good run for their money.Learn more about the latest energy technologies atASMEs Power and Energy. And on a cost curve of less than $8 per kwh, it could clobber b atteries and completely disrupt energy supply. Peter Schubert, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

New neuroscience reveals 5 rituals that will make you happy
New neuroscience reveals 5 rituals that will make you happyNew neuroscience reveals 5 rituals that will make you happyYou want to be happy. Unfortunately, yur brain is not always in a cooperating kind of mood. What gives?Honestly, happiness is not a helpful goal. Yeah, you heard me. Its too vague and abstract. Ask people to define happiness and youll either get unhelpful, cliche answers or it will quickly devolve into a 2AM-dorm-room-philosophy-discussion. And plenty of research shows were not always very good at predictingwhat makes us happy. But our brain tries.Hard. Its a natural pattern-recognition machine, looking for what works and what doesnt, generalizing experience, making predictions and registering feedback.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraBut sometimes it makes a wrong turn, we develop bad habits and we dont even know what street happy is on anymora. We get into a down ward spiral thats no fun and the world needs that about as much as it needs another true crime podcast. The good news is we actually have a lot of control over our happiness - if we can get past that vague word and think about the concrete actions to take to get there. Stusies show40% of our happinessis within our control. (If that doesnt sound like a lot, think back to school - 40% is the difference between an A and an F.)So by doing the right things we can form better habits and create an upward happiness spiral. This is backed by a very serious pinky swear from yours truly. But dont trust me. Lets get the specifics from an expertalexanderplatz Korbis a neuroscientist at UCLA in the department of psychiatry and author ofThe Upward Spiral Workbook. Were gonna break down some of what Alex recommends and learn what your grey matter really needs in order to maximally increase smile production.Lets get to itChallenge Unhelpful ThoughtsThat sounds a little weird but the wording is quit e deliberate. When were feeling sad we get a little too focused on what is true and not what is helpful.Plenty of stuff is true. Cancer is true. Youre gonna die one day is true. Is an excessive amount of time thinking about it helpful if happiness is your goal?We think happiness is about money or love or success but the truth is your happiness is most determined by the thoughts in your head because thats what has your attention the vast majority of the time. Now you cant control what thoughts pop up but you can decide what is helpful and choose not to give the unhelpful thoughts any more attention than they deserve. And the other big problem we have with thoughts is just taking them way too seriously. Theyre suggestions. Possibilities. But theyre not gospel. Thoughts are often your lower brain talking. You need to get your prefrontal cortex on the case to examine them rigorously before you start acting on silly fears and anxieties. So listen to your thoughts - but dont necessarily be lieve them. Dont run with them until your brains Quality Control Department has signed off.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookBut your thoughts are just thoughts- the whisperings of your limbic system and your striatum. Thoughts are something you have, but they are not who you are. You are not your limbic system. You are not your striatum. Identifying, acknowledging, and reframing unhelpful thoughts will be something well revisit throughout this book. Taking unterstellung small steps helps the prefrontal cortex get a runaway limbic system back under control (Ochsner et al., 2004)All that is fine and dandy but how do we identify thoughts that are unhelpful? Luckily, Alex rounded up the usual suspects1)Black and White Thinking100% good and 100% evil only exist in superhero movies. Frankly, sometimes it would beniceif life welches this clear, but it aint. And when it comes to your mood, youll be a lot happier if you realize there are heaping piles of nuance to most things.2)Unrealistic Expe ctationsDid I say this blog post will make you happy immediately and forever? No. But if youre assuming that, guess who is gonna be disappointed? You. (And me, honestly.) Cynicism is bad but a little skepticism is essential. Consistently unrealistic expectations are a great way to make sure thateverythingin life sucks.3)Selective AttentionIf your brain is always looking for the negative, trust me, youre gonna find it. Most of happiness is perspective. You could read this post and say, Oh my god, this is too much to do Or you can say, Wow, there are so many ways for me to increase my happiness Same facts, different perspective. And they produce very different feelings.4)Disqualifying the PositiveSometimes we go into problem-solving mode and focus only on what is broken. But if you stay in this frame all the time its a one way trip to the world of Zoloft. Plenty of good things happen and you need to appreciate them. Nobody has ever said taking things for granted is a good idea. Life c ould always be worse - but its not. So give that its due.5)Predicting the FutureThis will never work or Theyre going to think Im stupid. You dont know the future. So dont act like you do. (But if you really do, please email me tomorrows lottery numbers. Thanks.)7)Should thoughtsThis is a big one. I suggest banning the word should from your vocabulary. But sheshould Its usually just an insistence that the world bends to your will and is a great way to amplify frustration. (For more on the inherent evils of should clickhere.)Make a list of your most common unhelpful thought patterns. (Having a friend assist you can be good - and humbling.) Labeling these thoughts is powerful. Give them silly names. And next time they hijack your brain, challenge them. Dont beat yourself up. Just play a game of catching yourself in the act, label the thought, and then consider more helpful ways to look at the problem. This is an absurdly powerful habit to get into.(To learn more about how you can lead a successful life, check out my bestselling bookhere.)Okay, lets get outta your head. Too much going on in there already. A big part of life actually takes place outside of it, believe it or not. And if you want to increase happiness, your brain cant treat life like a spectator sport. Youre gonna need toDo mora StuffDealing with unhelpful thought patterns is the hallmark of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and its the single most proven method for boosting mood and reversing depression. But another very powerful scientific technique is Behavioral Activation Therapy. And, frankly, thats a really fancy psychology term for do more stuff.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookYour actions, whether intentional or unintentional, have consequences for the activity and chemistry of key neural circuits. A fact that you can take advantage of to create an upward spiral. This idea is exploited by one of the most effective treatments for depression behavioral activation therapy. Behavioral activation f ocuses on changing unhelpful behaviors that contribute to depression and incorporating more helpful ones. This schriftart of approach has been shown to alter the activity in the emotion regulation, motivation, and habit circuits in the brain- the medial prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, and dorsal striatum, respectively (Dichter et al., 2009).We associate depression with lethargy and happiness with energy - accurately. But its a two-way street. A feedback loop. If youre active and doing things, youre less likely to be bogged down ruminating. And if youre idle, it can be easy to dwell on the negative. So you need to get out there and accomplish some big, long-term audacious goals to be happy, right?Wrong. This is a common mistake we make. Big goals are great, but the research confirms the clicheits the little things. Lots of little positives are better for happiness that occasionally bagging an elephant.Arrange your life so that you have lot of little positives coming your way , and that you take the time to appreciate them. And the best way to make sure that happens is todo more stuff. You want good karma? Well, for the non-Sanskrit speakers among us, karma literally translates as action. You have to do good things to have good stuff come back your way.So what kinda stuff should you be doing more of? Alex has a list of stuff your brain likesEnjoyable stuff News flash - doing fun things can lead to fun.Achievement stuff Defeat your goals in single combat and feel like a conquering hero.Meaningful stuff When was the last time you did volunteer work? Or just helped someone?Physical stuff Exercise. Not only keeps you alive, but its likemiracle grow for your brain.Social stuff We use solitary confinement to punish people, dont we?Be specific. Tailor your do-more-of-this-list to you, personally. What do you enjoy but dont do as often as you like? What makes you feel competent, accomplished, and successful? Now put those things on your calendar. Not metaphoricall y. Schedule them for the coming week. Right now. Cmon. Chop, chop. Get a friend involved to hold you accountable and you can make two brains happier.(To learn the 4-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, clickhere.)Excuse me for repeating myself but one of the above five stuffs-to-do deserves special attention - because it is the single greatest contributor to happinessGet SocialWhat happens when you study the happiest people around and analyze what they have in common? Researchers did just that. There was a clear answer to what differentiated these people from everyone else. And it wasnt money, smarts, age, gender or race.It was strong relationships. If you want to keep your brain happy, be clear on who your hilfe network is. Know who matters and nurture those relationships. So who isyourinner circle?Aaaaaaand this is where your mind goes blank, so Alex has some questions to help youWho appreciates you or thinks highly of you, whether or not you agree with them?Who is there to help you out if needed?Who can you call, text or visit for emotional support?Who is good with giving you advice or helping you make decisions?Who do you like spending time with?Who can you do activities with?Write the names down. Yeah, now. This is critical Defcon-1 schriftart stuff right here, bubba. Make a list. (If you want to use colored markers and put glitter on the list and title it MY BESTEST FRIENDS IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD I wont stop you.)Relationship may be a noun but for you and me its a verb. You want to check in with those people. Regularly. What kinda check-ins does your brain like? Science has answers.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookThe best thing to do is talk with the person in real life or meet up for an activity (Sherman, Michikyan, Greenfield, 2013). The next best thing is talking on the phone, which is better than texts or emails. Seeing someone and hearing their voice activates your mirror neuron system in ways that texting cant match. Now go down your list and start sending some texts. Schedule activities or hang-outs if possible. And when you see people, touch them. Dont go all Kevin Spacey on people but research showsphysical contactis much more important than you think.Want to make this logistically easier and even more powerful? Be part of a group that meets regularly.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookGroups can not only help you feel better but also make you feel like youre more in control of your life (Greenaway et al., 2015). Joining a group helps reduce symptoms of depression and can even prevent it in the first place (Cruwys et al., 2013). And it unfortunately works the other way too if you leave a supportive group, you can increase your risk for depression (Seymour-Smith, Cruwys, Haslam, Brodribb, 2017).And I wanna keep it real, so lets cover the less-happy-cheery side of things too not all social time is good time. Some people are jerks. Another way to boost your happiness is to break social ties with toxic folks.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookResearch shows that sometimes it can be beneficial to break social ties (Dingle, Stark, Cruwys, Best, 2015). Other people reinforce our habits, including our social and emotional habits. So if you dont like those habits or the feelings those people trigger, change the people you surround yourself with.Think of your social life like a bonsai tree. You need to water it and fertilize it - but you also need to trim it to keep it healthy.(To learn the 4 harsh truths that will make you a better person, clickhere.)Now some things are not an easy change. Youve probably been trying to improve some areas of your life for years and have shown as much progress as a blind man in an art appreciation class. So how can we work with our brains to break bad habits?Slay Unhelpful Habits - GentlyIve already posted a lot about the science ofbreaking bad habits and creating good ones. But what are the neuroscience-y bits here that often get neglected when we try to improve habit s?Feelings.Often, discussion of habit-making and breaking is mechanical. And your brain isnt very mechanical. When youre trying to quit bad habits you often get critical with yourself which leads to bad feelings that make you cave and go back to your old ways. Now self-criticism does activate the mistake region of the brain to help us regulate our behavior. But it can also easily lead to bad moods. So lets activate a different networkInstead of self-criticism, tryself-reassurance.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookSelf-criticism is one means of activating the prefrontal cortex to try to regulate the limbic system, and its linked to activation of the vorn liegend cingulate- the mistake region of the brain (Longe et al., 2010). But this pattern of thinking can get in the way of making positive change, particularly if youre feeling down and demotivated. By contrast, self-reassurance uses the parts of the PFC that more directly regulate the emotional limbic system. It also activates the insula , the part of the brain that feels things and is linked to empathy. Self-reassurance therefore helps with making positive changes. So you can either feel your emotions empathically and start to make a change or, through old coping habits, avoid feeling them and stay on the same course. The choice is up to you.How do we do that? Ironically, think less about your mistakes and more about the qualities of yourself you like best. Feeling good about yourself gives you the energy and confidence to keep improving.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookResearch has shown that habits can be easier to change if you focus not on your worst qualities but on your best ones (Epton, Harris, Kane, van Koningsbruggen, Sheeran, 2015). Think about what you like most about yourself what qualities of yours would you not want to change? This type of focus is rewarding and activates the nucleus accumbens (Dutcher et al., 2016).Beating yourself up wont make you better. Liking yourself will.(To learn how to have a l ong awesome life, clickhere.)Okay, now is the part where you thank me for all Ive done for you.Huh? Me? Selfish? Jeez, Louise. No, this will benefityou, not meMore Gratty-toodRemember when I said the bulk of happiness is perspective? A lot of people question that one. (For the record, I am right and they are wrong.)Gratitudeis the best example. It feels good.Reallygood. But we forget that. We take things for granted. Think about what matters most to you in life. Loved ones, home, career, health. Now imagine losing them all. Go full-Biblical-Job-story.Now dont just think it,feelit for a second. Losing all those things that mean so muchOkay, thats enough. Back to reality you havent lost anything. But other peoplearein that situation. You arent one of them. Feel lucky? You should.Did you just gain anything? Not really. Did you have to accomplish anything? Nope. Nothing really changed - except yourperspective. You looked around and realized how good you have it. Thats all it takes. You didnt need to buy anything, do anything or accomplish anything. You just had to appreciate what you have and be thankful for it to get a boost.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookGratitude can decrease depression symptoms as well as stress in general, and leads to increased perception of social support (Wood, Maltby, Gillett, Linley, Joseph, 2008). It improves self-esteem and psychological well-being (Lin, 2015). It can even improve your physical health and the quality of your sleep (Hill, Allemand, Roberts, 2013 Wood, Joseph, Lloyd, Atkins, 2009). Gratitude has so many benefits because it affects a wide variety of brain regions and chemicals. Importantly, gratitude has the power to activate the dopamine system, specifically the brain stem region where dopamine is produced (Zahn et al., 2009).Oh, and that gratitude thing is even nicer if you express it to other people. (Contemplating doomsday scenarios alone in your head is great but telling others thank you is less likely to make you cry and wet yourself.)FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookGratitude increases our sense of connection with others. Studies of gratitude have shown that it activates the same medial prefrontal regions that we utilize to understand the perspective of other people and to act compassionately (Fox, Kaplan, Damasio, Damasio, 2015). Part of the reason gratitude can help you feel more connected to others is that in recognizing what you are grateful for, you must acknowledge what you need. And in acknowledging what you need, you become aware of the needs of others too. In addition, many of the benefits of gratitude for others are mediated by the oxytocin system (vanOyen Witviliet, et al., 2018). This is an upward spiral, as gratitude facilitates connection with others and connection with others facilitates gratitude. So write a thank you letter. (Or email. Or text.) You dont even have to send it if you feel awkward. It will make you feel good. In fact, this actually showed effects on the brain fo rmonths.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookOne study asked participants to write gratitude letters and found that it changed gratitude-related activity in their anterior cingulate cortex even several months later (Kini et al., 2016). The anterior cingulate region generally responds to self-relevant stimuli. Thus, as you practice being grateful, positive aspects of your life suddenly become more relevant to you. You wont have to look for them so hard, because your brain will be automatically looking for you.But its better if youdosend that letter. Itll improve your relationship. Itll make two people happy. Heck, itll make me happy as well, so thats three for the price of one.(To learn how to deal with passive-aggressive people, clickhere.)Okay, weve learned a lot. Now is the part where we round everything up and I typically mention one more enticing thing so that you actually read to the bottom.Yes, there will be an enticing thing. So you should read to the bottom.Sum UpHeres how neuroscie nce can make you happyChallenge Unhelpful Thoughts Anytime youre lost in negative thought, dont ask yourself if its true, ask if it is helpful.Do More Stuff More little good things beat few big great things when it comes to happiness. So do more things to get more results. Karma = action.Be Social No man is an island. (At the very least, you are an archipelago.)Slay Unhelpful Habits Thinking about what you like about you is the first step to building a better you.More Gratty-tood You dont need to buy anything or do anything to feel happier. You just need to appreciate what you already have.Ever have something terrible happen and you just laugh? As if for a second, its not your life its a comedy youre watching and the worst thing imaginable just happened to the poor protagonist? This is a great habit to develop. Because years later when we remember those terrible moments what do we do? Often, we laugh. Theyre the funny, embarrassing stories we tell.So laugh now. Your brainloves humora nd it eases pain. We need to take life seriously when making decisions, but when we cant affect outcomes its healthier to take a big picture view. Think of how good a story this will be down the line.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookHumor is rewarding and enjoyable, and thus activates the dopamine-rich nucleus accumbens along with the brain stem region that produces dopamine (Mobbs, Greicius, Abdel-Azim, Menon, Reiss, 2003). In addition, humor activates motivational parts of the prefrontal cortex, as well as the amygdala (Bartolo, Benuzzi, Nocetti, Baraldi, Nichelli, 2006). This helps to maintain the important balance between the prefrontal cortex and limbic system that is so essential to long-term well-being.Does this all seem like a lot to do? paintball - thats the wrong perspective, remember? Instead, try, Look at how many ways there are to be happier Now thats more like it.You dont have to do it all. UCMJ Punitive Article 115 - Malingering
UCMJ Punitive Article 115 - MalingeringUCMJ Punitive Article 115 - MalingeringArticle 115 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) deals with malingering. Although its sort of an outdated word, malingering is a serious offense in the military. It means youre pretending to do the job youre assigned instead of actually doing it, and it carries serious penalties which vary based on a few specific factors. According to the UCMJ The essence of this offense is the design to avoid performance of any work, duty, or service which may properly or normally be expected of one in themilitary service. Whether to avoid all dutyor only a particular job, it is the purpose to shirk which characterizes the offense. Hence, the nature or permanence of a self-inflicted injury is bedrngnis material on the question of guilt, nor is the seriousness of a physical or mental disability which is a ?shame. What Constitutes Malingering in the Military Being found guilty of malingering depends on a few fa ctors. If you know youre assigned to a specific duty or area of work, and pretend to be sick or injured, or if you intentionally hurt yourself to avoid that duty, then you fit the criteria of a malingerer. The UCMJ states Any person subject to this chapter who for the purpose of avoiding work, duty, or service- (1) feigns illness, physical disablement, mental lapse or derangement or(2) intentionally inflicts self-injury shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.Elements.(1) That the accused was assigned toor was aware of prospective assignment to, or availability for, the performance of work, duty, or service(2) That the accused feigned illness, physical disablement, mental lapse or derangement, or intentionally inflicted injury upon himself or herself and(3) That the accuseds purpose or intent in doing so was to avoid the work, duty, or service. Note If the offense was committed in time of war or in a hostile fire pay zone, add the following element(4) That the offense was co mmitted (in time of war) (in a hostile fire pay zone). Punishment for Malingering Depending on the nature of the offense, theres a range of punishment for malingering. If it can be proven that the accused person intentionally injured himself, or pretended to be injured, thats the baseline. If the acts happened during wartime or a hostile war zone, the punishments will be more severe. According to the UCMJ, feigning an injury will get you a dishonorable discharge and a one-year confinement, during which youll forfeit all pay and allowances. Feigning injury during wartime or in a hostile war zone will result in adishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay and a three-year confinement. For intentionally injuring yourself, which can range from violently hurting yourself to starving yourself to get out of work, you can expect a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay and a five-year confinement. If you intentionally injure yourself during war or in a hostile zone, youll be confined fo r 10 years and be dishonorably discharged.

8 Tips to Help Strengthen Team Problem Solving Skills
8 Tips to Help Strengthen Team Problem Solving Skills8 Tips to Help Strengthen Team Problem Solving SkillsGroup problem-solving skills, like exercise and playing the piano, grow easier and more effective with ample practice. Unfortunately, most managers fail to recognize the need to develop the decision-making and problem-solving muscles of their kollektivs, leaving money and performance on the table and potentially damaging their reputations. And while we all know that listening to classical music or thinking about exercising wont change a thing, neither will wishing your team was better at solving customer and organizational problems. Its time to put your team to work on strengthening their problem-solving skills. Beware Creating the Smoldering Garbage Can Culture With Your Team In too many workplaces, the prevailing culture suggests that most problems belong to someone else. In some of the cultures Ive encountered, the resistance to stepping up and voluntarily solving a proble m is both laughable and sad. I use an anecdote of a group of individuals in an office observing and talking about a smoldering garbage can in the corner to amplify the point. Is that garbage can on fire? asks the first worker. Not sure, says the second worker. It is smoking, though, he adds. I wonder who owns fixing this, offers a third employee. Its not me, said the first. I think this problem is beyond our pay grades, said the second. Sure hope someone puts it out before it gets too big, said the third. Well, its time to get back to work, said the first. Everyone nods and heads back to their cubicles. While it is unlikely (hopefully) any group would ignore a smoldering garbage can, the lack of schritte on display for solving even the easiest of problems in the workplace is frustrating for many managers. Unfortunately, these same frustrated managers are often key contributors to their teams unwillingness to jump in and solve problems. 3 Big Reasons Your Team Wont Step Up to Prob lem-Solving You are micromanaging your team, and youve trained everyone to wait for your directions for even the simplest of tasks. Note most micromanaging managers are unaware of their style and its adverse impact. Ask someone for some feedback on you.You encourage experimentation and then metaphorically bite peoples heads off if they make a mistake. Nothing stifles group initiative more effectively than contradictory behaviors from the boss. You have not actively fostered a culture that encourages spontaneous team development and collaboration for problem-solving. In these environments, I often see managers who emphasize and respect the roles of the individuals and view the group collaboration as less important. As a consequence, employees are both unfamiliar and uncomfortable with teaming together to tackle larger issues. The first two behaviors are indicators of the need for training and coaching. The third is readily solvable with the introduction of some simple but effective processes and approaches. 8 Tips to Help Your Team Strengthen Problem-Solving Skills Jump-start group problem-solving by creating small victories. For teams unfamiliar with working together, select smaller initiatives that merit group consideration and ultimate consensus. Resist your temptation to offer the solution and instead, serve as a facilitator for group consideration of the issue. As the group gains experience collaborating, serve up some of the stickier and larger workplace challenges. Success breeds success.Give the team autonomy for implementing their ideas. Nothing creates accountability like owning both the solution and the implementation of the solution. Your willingness to let a group carry a problem from identification to resolution reinforces your confidence and trust in their work. People and teams respond positively to trust from the boss. Teach your team how to frame issues. Framing is a powerful technique for looking at a situation from multiple perspectives . For example, a product team might look at a competitors announcement of a new offering as a threat in the marketplace. Another view might suggest that the competitor will now be singularly focused on bringing that product to market, leaving them vulnerable to a new offering from your firm with a different customer group. Teach your teams to frame issues from multiple perspectives positive, negative or neutral, and then encourage them to develop unique solutions for each frame. Encourage the team to draw upon your help in removing obstacles or securing needed resources. Part of your success in strengthening your teams problem-solving skills is to remove yourself as a critical part of the solution development process. Instead of holding court in team meetings and potentially biasing the group with your views, make certain everyone understands your willingness to support the team by working across functions and up the organizational ladder to secure budgets, talent, and other essenti al resources. Never respond to failures or misfires with anger. While a group misfire on a big issue is frustrating and even anger-inducing, this is a destructive behavior and must be avoided. The proper response is to challenge the team to step back from the situation and analyze what worked and what did not work. Challenge them to describe how they will improve in the future and then move forward. Lingering on a failure is toxic for the team environment.Set high expectations. While the above steps suggest a reduced or removed role for you as the manager, you get the final say on the recommendations of your team. If the team has failed to think through a complex issue or to consider all options as part of their solution development, it is reasonable for you to push back and challenge them to dig deeper. A technique for teaching teams to think critically about a topic is through the use of proper questioning. Instead of criticizing an idea, ask questions that lead the group to under stand that it is more complex or requires a different view than the one presented. Questions teach Encourage teams to draw on outside expertise. One of the classic traps of teams is groupthink- a process where the group focuses exclusively on their ideas and suppresses or rejects outside and differing views. This dangerous trap is easily avoided by ensuring the team draws in individuals who can objectively evaluate assumptions and approaches and provide candid feedback.Celebrate often The stress and pressures of the work are made bearable by the feelings of accomplishment and contribution. The opportunity to revel in accomplishments for a few moments in time offers a powerful reinforcement for the benefits of working together to solve problems. The Bottom Line A famous team researcher, J. Richard Hackman, once suggested that greatness was possible with every team, but you shouldnt count on it. His glaubenszeugnis was that teams perform best when clear structure, proper support, and defined processes are present and reinforced in a positive manner. The essence of group work is about problem-solving, and the formula for strengthening a teams ability to do this is identical to the formula for excelling at music or exercise proper instruction and ample practice with quality feedback. Its time to help your team strengthen their problem-solving skills.

Learn How to Become a SWAT Team Member
Learn How to Become a SWAT Team MemberLearn How to Become a SWAT Team MemberTheres a lot of mystery and mystique surrounding SWATteams around the world. These highly trained, elite law enforcement specialty units have at their disposal a host of tools and tactics to make them ready for the most dangerous and volatile of situations that may requireassekuranzpolice action. You might evencall them the Navy SEALS of policing, which is why any police officer who is honest with themselves will likely admit that theyve had dreams of making the team at some point in their career. So just how do you become a SWAT team member? Minimum Requirements For SWAT First thingsfirst, before you can make it to SWAT, you need to make it as a police officer. Most SWAT team members, with the exception of a few medics or other non-law enforcement functions, are cops first, so you need to make sure you meet the tiefpunkt qualifications for a police officer. To be considered for a job as a police officer, you must, at a minimum Be a U.S. citizenBe at least 19 years old (minimum age will vary from state to state)Hold a valid driver licenseHave a high school diploma or G.E.D. (some agencies may require an associates or bachelors degree)Have either prior military service, other law enforcement or public contact work experience If you meet the minimums, youll undergo an extensive background investigation process, and youll need to completepolice academy training. Once youve gotten hired as a police officer, youll typically need to serve for at least two years and perhaps longer before you are eligible for any specialty units, including SWAT team positions. If youve got the requisite experience, youll be eligible to try out when a position becomes vacant. SWAT team try-outs are intense and will require everything youve got, both physically and mentally. Physical Fitness Perhaps the biggest challenges for aspiring SWAT team members are the physical requirements. SWAT officers have to be in the absolute top physical condition in order to perform the many functions they may be called to handle. For that reason, SWAT team physical assessments measure the strength and endurance of potential new members. Specific physical requirements will likely vary among departments, but a good gauge to binnensee if youre close to where you need to be is the FBIs Tactical Hostage Rescue Team physical requirements. Candidates for the FBIs HRT must, at a minimum, be able to Perform 12 pull-upsComplete 60 sit-ups in 2 minutesPerform 50 push-upsRun 2 miles in under 1459Climb 8 flights of stairs, wearing a 50-lb vest and carrying a 35-lb ram, in 60 secondsSwim 200 meters in 7 minutes. Keep in mind that these are only the minimum physical requirements to be considered for the team, and this is just one agency. Different agencies may have slightly different requirements, but the fact remains that you will need to get in shape and stay in shape to make it in SWAT. Additional Requiremen ts Most of the emphasis for SWAT team tryouts and selection is placed upon physical fitness, but there are other considerations, as well. SWAT members must be an expert marksman, able to think quickly on their feet, take and give orders, communicate effectively with others, have a strong sense of teamwork, and be mentally tough. In many cases, an officers priorwork history and performancewith the department will be taken intoconsideration when choosing SWAT members. Becoming a SWAT Team Member SWAT team members are considered to be elite within the ranks of law enforcement agencies. These units are highly cohesive teams in which every member plays a vital role in advancing the mission of the group. It takes a tremendous amount of dedication, determination, and hard work, but if you have a strong sense of team and self-sacrificeand you think you can muster the mental and physical strength needed to make it on the SWAT team, then you may just find it to be the perfect criminology career for you.

6 Signs Youre Being Taken Advantage of at Work - The Muse
6 Signs Youre Being Taken Advantage of at Work - The Muse 6 Signs Youre Being Taken Advantage of at Work One hard truth about being successful is this: You have to go above and beyond. And personally, Iâve always taken this to heart. Iâve worked longer hours than was expected of me, said yes to almost every project, and spent way too much time perfecting assignments. However, Iâm also aware that this work ethic puts me in a difficult position- becoming a doormat for my boss or co-workers to toss anything my way. If youâre unsure whether youâre being taken advantage of in your current job, keep an eye out for these six signs: 1. People Have Stopped Asking Whether Itâs OK to Hand You More Work The caveat with this is that from time to time, your boss is going to give you projects without getting your buy-in. This is normal and part of them being in charge of your goals and responsibilities. Whatâs not normal is constantly being handed extra assignments that significantly increase your workload and arenât in-line with your job description. Especially if these assignments are coming from your co-workers and not your boss. If this sounds like you, read this to learn how to say no to these requests. And read this if youâre looking for a professional, non-whiny way to tell your boss that you have too much on your plate. 2. No One Ever Says Thank You You canât expect a âthank youâ from your manager every time you do something required of you, but if youâre never recognized for the work you do? Thatâs not great. In an article by Muse writer Larry Alton called â5 Reasons Your Boss Doesnât Notice Youâre Killing it at Work Lately,â he recommends, âInstead of waiting around for your manager to set a meeting, make an appointment with her- in fact, if you can, make it a weekly one.â Then, use that time to go over everything youâve completed (and make it impossible for your boss not to acknowledge you). And when it comes to your colleagues, check out this article. 3. Youâre Spending a Majority of Time Doing Things That Are Outside Your Job Description Youâre working on things that arenât your responsibility, and as a result never have time to complete your own projects. This maybe hurts your reputation with your boss or requires you to stay late while everyone else waltzes out at 6 PM sharp. Itâs OK to want to help others, but if itâs taking over your calendar you may need to cut down on how much assistance you offer up (read this for how to do that). Or, if youâve found yourself running non-work-related errands for your boss (when âpersonal assistantâ isnât your title), it may be time to have a tough conversation with your manager about this. 4. Youâre Doing the Work of Two (or More) People Maybe someone quit and youâre now doing two different jobs at the same time. Or, youâre working your butt off while the rest of your colleagues sit idly by and slack off. Everyone has slower days and busier days, but if youâre feeling like the only one whoâs stressed on a regular basis, itâs worth bringing this up to your boss. If youâre unsure of how to get the conversation started, start by sending an email that says something along the lines of: Iâd love to discuss my workload and priorities with you if you have some free time to meet this week, as Iâve struggled to keep up with all the new assignments sent my way. Is there a time that works best for you? 5. You Havenât Been Compensated for Your Efforts If all the signs above hit home, but youâve yet to receive a raise or promotion for doing the extra work, youâre almost definitely being taken advantage of. The one exception is if you know your company isnât doing well- if thatâs the case, Iâd suggest figuring out how much compensation matters to your overall happiness. If itâs not a huge win for you, consider talking to your boss about other benefits you might be able to get in exchange. But if thatâs not the case, this is when itâs worth negotiating for a raise or title change. And because we know this is easier said than done, we put together this worksheet to help make it easier. 6. Youâre Not Allowed to Take Breaks or Time Off Similar to compensation, when youâre working extra hard youâre most certainly worthy of taking breaks here and there to recharge. But if your manager yells at you for taking a short lunch break or never lets you go on vacation for too long (or at all), thatâs a major red flag. Regardless of what industry youâre in, a good manager (and company) recognizes the importance of taking time off. All the research backs up the fact that itâs better for employee productivity and the companyâs bottom line. Hereâs the hard truth: If you found yourself nodding along to this entire article, youâre in a tough spot. You can either try to fix the situation or you can start to think of your next move. But before you do anything drastic, take a quick look in the mirror and make sure that youâre not part of the problem. That means learning to set boundaries, saying no more often, and initiating those hard conversations with your boss. Because the worst thing would be to leave this job and end up in the same situation because of your habits.

Does the State You Live in Affect the Kind of Job Seeker You Are [Infographic]
Does the State You Live in Affect the Kind of Job Seeker You Are [Infographic] Does the State You Live in Affect the Kind of Job Seeker You Are [Infographic] Now, Truity offers another infographic, one that dives into how the state a person lives in may shape their personality. Is there any truth to the stereotypes of the hospitable Southerner, the plainspoken Midwesterner, the flighty Californian? asks the infographic? The infographic sorts the people of each state into five categories: The Producers: Hailing from states as diverse as Texas, Washington, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, among others, the producers are hardworking, no-nonsense folks who enjoy the company of others. The Open Minds: These intellectuals, who have strong predilections for the arts and sciences, are spread across America, popping up in Alaska, California, New York, and a host of other states. The Critics: The brash and tough-minded, debate-loving critic can be found in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Illinois, and a few other places. The Characters: The members of this complex bunch are independent-minded people who buck conventions. Employers can find them in Delaware, Kentucky, and Vermont. The Friendly Conservatives: Think salt of the earth. The friendly conservative takes pride in their community, says whats on their mind (warmly, of course!), and lives in one of the two Dakotas. 5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume
5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume 5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume 5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume Looking for a job is a stressful experience, and it can be a long one, too. You go out to interviews, sit through the gruelling questioning, hoping your answer was a correct one. Even worse, you have to wait for days, sometimes weeks, for an answer from the employers. Job searching really is nerve-racking. And you can have all the necessary skills, experience or education, for the position you are applying for. Nevertheless, if you do not present yourself in the right way through your CV, the chances of you getting that job will be very slim. Courtesy: blog.execu-search.com Every recruiter is looking for a qualified candidate, but even if the candidate is the right one, your bad CV can cost you the job. There are a few things the recruiters look for, and you should know what those are. On that account, here is a list of things you should pay attention to when making your CV because thatâs what the recruiters will look for. 1. Readability Whatever you put in your CV, it has to be readable. What does readable mean, you might ask? Well, it means that the format of your CV is simple, first of all. Do not just copy/paste some format without adjusting it to your information. Also, choose an appropriate font. Please, do not choose Comic Sans. Moreover, check your spelling and grammar. This is really important since it will show how educated you are. If you want, you can have a friend or colleague proofread it just to be sure everything is alright. Furthermore, if you are a graphic designer, you can design your own CV and show your skills there. It will be fun and useful. You will certainly showcase what you know. But in the end, what matters is a clean, readable format. Something that recruiters can read in a few seconds and get the information they need within that time. 2. Most recent jobs Why is this important? Well, by looking at your work history, the recruiters can get a sense of what you have been up to, and what you might be capable of doing. Also, if you are currently employed but you still applied for a new position, then the recruiter might be wondering if you are not satisfied at your current job or something like that. Additionally, if your last position lasted only a few months, the question whether you were fired and why might be raised, as well as why you werenât able to keep your job. But, the most important reason why your recent jobs matter, is to see if you have worked in similar positions and/or industry. This can help you a lot, since it shows that you are already familiar with the industry you want to work in. 3. Keyword search Nowadays, many companies use a computer program to pick out resumes by using keyword research. This is why it is crucial to carefully write your CV, with strategic planning. When writing it, think about the position you are applying for, but also about your previous ones, too. If you are applying to be a manager, and you have a degree for it, or have worked in that position before, then make sure you put that keyword in the CV. For example, put Marketing Manager or Project Manager. Furthermore, if you have knowledge of programming then putting Javascript or Python could do wonders for you. Obviously, it is all about good thinking. However, it doesnât mean that you should put unrelated keywords in your CV just so that you could be picked out by the recruiter. Making the CV relevant is whatâs important. And lastly, do not think you can fool anyone by using white font to hide the extra keywords. 4. Gaps If you have gaps in your resume, it might be a bad sign. In case you have gaps between jobs and cannot explain them, other than saying you were too lazy to work, then you might have a problem. Gaps are good only in a few scenarios. For example, if you took off a few years to start your own company and have been self-employed, then the gap is totally justified. Or, if you have been committing yourself to your children, giving birth and raising them, then that too is justified. Everything else that might be the reason for the gaps, is bad. Perhaps if you hold your ground and explain the gap, then maybe the recruiter will give you a chance. The worst case scenario is that you were doing nothing in those few years. The reasons such as âI was not interested in workingâ or âI was lazyâ are very very bad explanations. So, be careful about your reasoning and make sure you can fill in those gaps with excellent explanations. 5. Companies you have worked for This is similar to looking at your most recent jobs. By getting to know your work history, the recruiters will be able to figure out who you are as a working person. If you have worked in several companies from different industry fields, then you might seem like someone who is capable of doing many things. Moreover, it shows that you have knowledge in a few disciplines and that you are perhaps adjustable. If you get to the actual interview, you might be asked about your previous jobs and what were your tasks; if you liked your assignments, and which one you liked more. Additionally, they can ask why you to chose from two different industries. Everything is relevant. What is more, your history will tell the recruiters to what kind of work environment you are used to. Whether it is a strict office job, or if you are capable of being in the field, constantly on the move. Therefore, keep in mind that your work history can tell a lot about you, even without you saying a word. As you can see, it takes a lot of thinking and planning when writing a resume. You have to think of ways to sell yourself to the recruiters. If you are invited for an interview, then it means your CV was good and you managed to get their attention with just a piece of paper. That piece of paper can either make you or break you. Therefore, donât underestimate its power. 5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume 5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume Looking for a job is a stressful experience, and it can be a long one, too. This Wacky Cover Letter Scored Me My Dream Job
This Wacky Cover Letter Scored Me My Dream Job This Wacky Cover Letter Scored Me My Dream Job If thereâs one way to make a recruiter yawn, itâs submitting a dry, dull cover letter thatâs essentially a reworked version of your resume. Your cover letter shouldnât just be a list of your skills and experience - itâs an opportunity to highlight who you are as a person, and what makes you different from all of the other candidates who are vying for the same position as you. You want to strike the right balance between professional, passionate, and creative . But what does that actually look like on paper? Kaitlin Westbrook, a content writer and digital marketer at Eezy.com , seems to have struck just the right balance. Rather than a traditional cover letter, she applied for her current position with a cover letter formatted to look like a âclickbaitâ article, sensational headline and all. While we canât guarantee this is the right approach for every job opening out there, it certainly was for Westbrook - not long after she submitted her cover letter, she scored her dream job. We reached out to Westbrook to hear her take on why she thinks her approach worked so well, what she learned from it, and what advice she has for other job seekers trying to catch the attention of recruiters and hiring managers . Glassdoor: Can you tell us a little bit about your background? Kaitlin Westbrook: I do content writing and marketing at Vecteezy , an online tech startup that provides resources for graphic designers and other creatives. When I applied for my position with Vecteezy, I wasnât in the best place. I was doing contract work as a customer service representative, and because it was contract work, I knew it wasnât going to last forever. I was ready to pursue something that utilized my strengths in a way my current job didnât. Long story short, I was applying for a lot of things that didnât seem to pan out. Meanwhile, my contract was about to end soon, and I was worrying about rent and bills and where my future paychecks would come from. Then, an illustrator friend posted a Vecteezy position on Facebook. I knew right away I wanted it, but I wasnât sure what the best plan of action would be. Glassdoor: How did you come up with the idea for a âclickbaitâ cover letter? Kaitlin Westbrook: Like any younger sibling, I called up my older sister to ask for advice. Sheâs an art director, so sheâs always asking, âHow can you do this more creatively?â So, we started discussing my cover letter, brainstorming different ideas on how to make it stand out. I wanted a writing job , so we broke it down; write a cover letter that advertises writing. Instead of a typical cover letter, I wrote clickbait on why the company should hire me. Once I wrote it, I submitted it and hoped I hadnât made a mistake. Glassdoor: Submitting a cover letter like this is definitely a leap of faith. Why do you think it worked so well? Kaitlin Westbrook: I was applying for a senior level position with only some copywriting experience under my belt. So, while I really wasnât qualified for a senior level position, I think the company saw I really wanted to work for them and that I was willing to hustle. ??With that in mind, they were able to offer me a content writing position that also involved marketing. I honestly think they appreciated seeing someone with drive. Glassdoor: I also saw that you pointed out a grammatical error in your cover letter - thatâs pretty gutsy! Kaitlin Westbrook: The job listing required me to point out a grammatical error and include my favorite food in the cover letter. (I would never correct someoneâs job listing otherwise!) ??I really tried to go above and beyond, and I think that showed. Glassdoor: What advice would you give to job seekers looking to spice up their cover letters? Kaitlin Westbrook: This experience taught me professional risks can be worth it. Employers want professionalism and creativity, so itâs certainly a balancing act, but I would definitely try it again. I would encourage job-seekers to consider how they can be professional and still take risks, whether itâs in the cover letter, the resume, or something else. The right place will appreciate the creativity.

When kids have money in their pocket, so they have the chance to buy things that they want to participate in fun activities with their friends, they end up learning about budgeting, needs vs. wants and so much more! As a parent, it can be frustrating that the only source of money is an allowance or doing chores around the house. It helps to have kids learn how to make money in ways other than from us. Here are a few ways to help kids earn their own spending money: Bake Sale or Lemonade Stand Itâs a common idea for kids who want to make money, but a lemonade stand teaches kids basic lessons about entrepreneurship. Encourage the kids to make cookies, finger foods, or drinks that can be sold on the street corner. The kids will learn how to put in the work to make a product that can be sold, and they will get a little spending money when the neighbors stop to buy a treat. Help your child improve their services by learning good techniques to get the job done right. Also, help them put together flyers and price lists so that they have easy marketing materials when talking with people in the area. Have a Garage Sale Many kids have too many toys, especially since they are always getting gifts on their birthday and during holidays. Plan a family garage sale, and let each child choose the items they would like to sell. Let them keep the money that is earned from selling their own items. A garage sale is beneficial to earn money, and you will also be able to de-clutter the house at the same time. Here are some examples: Go to the mountains and pick mistletoe, and sell it during Christmas time.Make Valentineâs treats, such as chocolate truffles and heart-shaped cookies that can be sold as Valentineâs gifts.Sell hardboiled eggs and egg dye kits for families to enjoy the activity of dying Easter eggs without the hassle of all the preparation.Take orders a week before Thanksgiving, and offer a pie delivery service the morning of Thanksgiving. Have the child gather recyclable goods, such as newspapers, soda cans, or glass bottles, and take them to the recycling plant. Sell Crafts and Home Décor Teach the kids how to make crafts, such as homemade jewelry or decorative signs for the home. Plan a family activity to make these items, and sell them at a local craft fair or on a website like Etsy.com. You might consider having the child involved in purchasing the supplies for the crafts, so they understand the value that goes into producing a product to sell. It is a really great one for kids who are already naturally artistic, teaching them early they can make money off their talents. This can help your child avoid the starving artist story! Offer Pet Care Services Many families travel during the summer, and they need pet care while they are gone.
